Lesson from a Wii

Slowly trudging along the path through Wee Wisdom Village, Spunky the Skunk kicked at rocks on the path with the scuffed toe of his sneaker. His backpack felt like someone had weighted it down with two tons of rocks and the corners of his mouth sloped down. He felt as rotten as the garbage his Mom had made him drag out to the curb last night. But this was worse than having to do chores. This was really, really bad.

If he hadn’t looked up at the last minute, Spunky would’ve run right smack into Allie the Cat, who happened to be headed the other direction down the path. Allie smiled and said, “What’s up?”

Spunky sighed and explained he’d just left his friend’s house where he’d been playing video games with a few kids in his class. Spunky hadn’t been very good because he didn’t have a Wii at home and the other kids started to make fun of him. He told Allie they’d called him a “loser.”

The cat shook her head and said, “Spunky, I know how you feel. I’ve been there and felt that. But you’re no loser!  Just because they said you’re no good, doesn’t mean it’s true. In fact, you are a divine child of God.”

“Huh?” Spunky asked.

“What I’m saying is, there’s God in everything. Meaning God’s inside of me AND God’s inside of you,” Allie told him. “Just because you didn’t win the video game, remember you are naturally good inside. You just have to believe it.”

Spunky thought this one over. “So Allie, you’re good. And I’m good. But those so-called friends of mine from school who called me a loser, they can’t be good!”

Allie grinned and said, “That’s where you’re wrong! Just because you didn’t like what they said doesn’t mean there isn’t the divine Spirit of God inside of them too. With some people you have to look a little harder to find it. But Spunky, if you look closely, you’ll find the good in everyone! Now, let’s go back to my house and get you some practice on my Wii. Next time you play you’re classmates, you’ll be the one winning!”

Question for Kids: If there’s good inside of everyone, think of someone who might have hurt your feelings and explain what’s good about them.
