Less Stress

Willow the Owl looked up from her book and saw Spunky the Skunk pacing near the swing set. “Spunky, I have the answer!”

“You mean your book told you what to do about my math test stress?” Spunky asked.

“Sure, and it’s not very complicated,” Willow replied. “First, you figure out what’s stressing you out.”

“Check!” said Allie the Cat who had been listening. “We know that’s Spunky’s math test.”

“Right!” said Willow. “Next, you need to reframe. That means you should try to see the problem a new way. Can you do that Spunky?”

“Well, if he can’t, then I can help!” said Ratta Tat the rappin’ Rat as he rode up on his skateboard. “Here Spunky, I’ve been workin’ on a new rap, just for you. It goes a little something like this:

            When you let your stress
            Make you feel like less,
            You will lose the fight
            And not sleep all night.

            I say if you will
            Just relax and chill,
            The stress melts away
            Into a perfect day!

“Chill and relax,” said Spunky as he thought it over. “I like that. Chill and relax. Maybe I’ll call it chillaxin’.” At this point, Spunky was smiling from ear to ear.

Willow said, “Just looking at you, I can tell you’re more relaxed. But you’re not always going to have Ratta Tat around to sing you a song, so you need to figure out how to do this reframing stuff on your own.”

Spunky nodded and said, “So next time I’m stressed about a math test, or anything else, I can focus on relaxing and then I’ll be able to see the problem differently. Like now, I’m having fun and not so worried about the test. I know I’ve studied hard and I’ll do the best I can.”

“See what a little reframing can do?” Willow said. “Now, let’s talk about summer vacation. It starts next week!”

Just then Ratta Tat let out a groan. “Vacation, what vacation? My dad said we’re not going on one this year.”

“Sounds like it’s time to do some reframing about that, Ratta Tat,” said Allie as she stretched out in the sun. “How could you see that differently?”
