Dish Duty
Knocking on the door to Willow the Owl’s house, Allie the Cat thought she heard a muffled answer from somewhere behind the door. So, she pushed the door open and let herself in. When she got to the kitchen, she found Willow in the middle of an experiment.
“What are you doing?” Allie asked.
“I’m trying to be greener.” Willow answered.
Allie’s eyes got big. “Everybody’s talking about going green these days. I’m taking my own sacks to the grocery store now. What are you doing?”
Willow shut off the water in the sink and turned toward Allie. “I’m trying to figure out if I use less water running the dishwasher or washing all my dishes by hand.”
“Well, that one’s easy!” Allie said. “I’m sure your dishwasher uses way more water.”
“You’d think so,” Willow said, “But remember Allie, don’t jump to conclusions. See here, I’ve been washing all the dishes by hand with the stopper in the sink. My sink is nearly full of water now, and I know this sink holds 6 gallons of water.”
“So when you wash them by hand, you use about 6 gallons?” Allie asked.
“That’s right.” Next, Willow pulled out the owner’s manual for her energy-saving dishwasher. “It says right here this dishwasher uses 4 gallons of water per cycle. So what does that tell you?”
Allie thought for a minute and then said, “Well, it tells me I was wrong. As long as you aren’t using a lot of water to rinse your dishes before they go in the dishwasher, that seems to be the best way to save water!” Allie grabbed a dish towel and volunteered to help dry the dishes from the experiment.
“What’s that you’re humming?” Willow asked as they worked side-by-side.
“Oh, just a little song from Ratta Tat the Rappin’ Rat. It goes: ‘It’s good to be green, ‘cause it keeps the world clean!”
